Friends of St Gabriel’s, Aldersbrook

St Gabriel’s Church has been at the heart of the Aldersbrook community for over a hundred years. The Church and St Gabriel's Community Hall are community assets that serve thousands of local people each year by providing a space for an enormous range of recreational, social and educational activities. However, the maintenance and upkeep of an ageing estate is extensive, costly and time-consuming. In the long-term the Church would like to become greener and more sustainable.

For the past few years a group of mainly non-church goers has been working with Father Martyn to run the Friends of St Gabriel's on the model of similar support groups for churches elsewhere. Through a number of events and grant applications, the Friends have helped the church to install solar panels on the hall roof, refit the hall kitchen, improve disabled access to the hall and to create new, accessible storage that will benefit all users.

Aims and objectives

  1. The Friends of St Gabriel’s exists to secure the long-term future of the Church and its Hall for all who live locally.

  2. The Friends is open to anyone who values the presence of St Gabriel’s as a community asset, including people from any religious background or of no faith at all.

  3. The Friends seek to achieve these goals through awareness raising, fundraising activities, and by mobilising volunteers to offer practical help improve the church, the hall, and the grounds.
